Chapter Twenty: It’s Quiet Here

Verin

We had to decide who would come with Juniper and me, since it went without saying that I’d go. I stayed out of it, letting everyone else choose the rest of our party. Eventually, everyone landed on Kizzy and Jasper, since we’d thought Zander would do well to stay with an unstable god, tied up in the backyard.

“Where to?” I asked Juniper, rubbing my hands together.

She took a breath, nearly bouncing on her heels from anxiety. “I saw Hermes hanging out around a lot of books. There were kids walking around with backpacks and notebooks and stuff like that.”

I made a face. “Is he in a school?”

“I think so. It looked like he was in the library, putting books away.”

I didn’t even want to know what would have convinced that man to spend his time in a school, messing about with the books there. I didn’t like the idea of some powerful, awful man hanging around a bunch of kids. He couldn’t have had good intentions.

“Do you know where that school is?” Kizzy asked.

Juniper nodded. “I can get us there when you’re ready.”

The others would stay behind and keep an eye on things, and hopefully find a way to get a handle on the fresh werewolves. I pushed that thought away, needing to focus on something I could actually fix.

With another deep breath, Juniper’s magic took us away from the backyard and to somewhere else entirely. It surprised me when we ended up somewhere silent, given all the screams I’d been hearing as of late. There would always be more screams around the corner, so I took this refreshing change of pace.

I took a look around, seeing that we stood among tall, thin trees fairly well spread apart. They looked nothing like the trees back home, but I knew very little about American landscapes. We could have been anywhere for all I knew.

“We’re in Kansas,” Juniper said.

“Wasn’t expecting that,” Kizzy muttered. “Why the hell would Hermes be in the middle of Kansas?”

Juniper shrugged. “We’ll find out.”

She started leading us through the trees, and it only took about a minute of walking before we appeared in civilization. Cars lined up near a sidewalk, but most sat empty. Light traffic flowed along as if the world hadn’t been falling apart everywhere else. I would have liked it if I didn’t know better.

“School’s just getting out,” Jasper said, nodding to the building across the road.

Dozens of kids ranging from fourteen to eighteen wandered around, some eager to get to the cars that waited for them, and some fine with lingering by the doors. I could barely remember my time in school, for how uneventful it had been. I could, however, remember wanting to get home as fast as possible. I couldn’t imagine why anyone would be fine stopping off to have a chat on the sidewalk, or even staying inside to get books from the library.

“Where to first?” Jasper asked his sister. “Can you tell if Hermes is still inside?”

“He was a few minutes ago,” she said.
